If you have to pick a Winter sport and your choices are skiing vs. snowboarding, which is for you? While both are fun, exhilarating and downhill activities, there are a few differences to consider before making your choice. Historically Speaking
Skiing is a time tested sport. The first recorded race, a 34 mile cross country race, took place in Norway in 1934. Samis (inhabitants of far northern Sweden, Norway, Finland and the Kola Peninsula of Russia)and Nordics invented the sport of skiing for three reasons: hunting, military maneuvers and transportation. Snowboarding is a relatively new sport with the first national race taking place in Woodstock, Vermont in 1982. Interestingly, the snowboard was invented by a gentleman named Sherman Poppen to be used as a toy by his daughter. The rest is history.
Equipment
Equipment plays a huge role in your sport of choice. Skiers sport a pair of boots hooked to a pair of skis with bindings (think doubles). Snowboards are attached to the rider with a special boot, no bindings necessary (think singles). Price wise, skiing is the more expensive of the sports to outfit with equipment. Remember, safety first; always wear a helmet regardless of your final choice.

Packed or powder, which one is best? if skiing is your pleasure, packed snow is best. You will love deeper, more powdery snow if snowboarding is your pick. The weather doesn't really matter for either choice--just the conditions on the surface below.
Physical Attributes
For a beginner, it is easier to learn how to ski especially because movement of both feet is necessary. Snowboarding, on the other hand, is harder to learn and involves moving you entire body to navigate the slope. Skiing requires you to have incredible balance but ski poles are a common accessory to help you along the way, especially when you are standing still. Snowboarding requires you to exert constant energy to remain upright while standing still--no ski poles allowed.
Facing forward and leaning forward with your feet straight ahead gets you down the hill on skis. Facing sideways with feet in the same direction and body perpendicular to the direction of your momentumis the snowboarding way. Sound confusing? It all comes together on the slopes.
If you take a tumble, untangling yourself after a fall on skis never seems to be simple. If there is a skiing injury to be had, it usually involves the knees, mainly because the downhill course is sprinkled with ice and bumps along the way. It is easier to get up after a fall on a snowboard than skis. It is a learned skill and once you master it, you are golden. Since many snowboarding injuries involve the wrists, wrist guards are a favorable means of protection.
As far as speed, surprisingly snowboarding wins this race. When matched one-on-one with the ability of a skier vs. a snowboarder, the snowboarder clearly has more velocity. Let the daredevil in you shine!
